Who is Wegovy® for?
Wegovy® is a once-weekly injectable prescription medicine that contains semaglutide.
It is used for weight loss and weight maintenance in addition to diet and exercise in adults, who have a:
- BMI* 30 kg/m2 or more (obesity), or
- BMI* 27 kg/m2 or more (overweight) and weight-related health problems.
Wegovy® is also used to reduce the risk of a heart disease-related event in adults with a history of heart disease who do not have Type 1 or Type 2 diabetes and have a BMI* 27 kg/m2 or more, in addition to standard treatment for heart disease.
Using an oral contraceptive? Here’s what you need to know
Wegovy® is not anticipated to reduce the effectiveness of oral contraceptives, so if you’re already using an oral contraceptive pill, you don’t need to switch to a non-oral contraception or add extra protection just because you’re taking Wegovy®.†
*BMI (Body Mass Index) is a measure of your weight in relation to your height.
†Barrier contraception not required during oral contraceptive use. Very common side effects of Wegovy® include vomiting and diarrhoea. These symptoms can affect how your body absorbs the oral contraceptive pill. If you experience any of these symptoms, please speak to a healthcare professional.

BMI is not a diagnostic tool. A healthcare professional may also consider other measures, like your waist size, to better understand your overall health and risk factors.
How does Wegovy® work for weight loss?
